ABOUT MERRI CREEK 1 and 2
This series was inspired by daily walks along one of my favourite local spots, Merri Creek in Fitzroy North. I lived in the area for years and often headed down to the creek to reconnect with nature and escape the busyness of work and inner-city life. Once you wander beneath the train bridge, it's easy to forget you're still so close to the city. It feels like stepping into another world.
I'd spend time sitting by the water, watching the ducks go about their day and enjoying the little peaceful sanctuary they'd made for themselves. There was something incredibly restorative about being there. A chance to slow down, take a breath and just be.
Rather than recreating the landscape literally, I wanted to capture the feeling of being immersed in nature and the calm it brought me. The winding creek, stones shimmering in the morning light and surrounding bushland inspired the organic forms and earthy palette. Dry yellow-greens, soft earthy pinks and stone greys reflect the quieter, more subtle colours of this particular landscape.
These paintings are a way of holding onto the feeling of finding refuge in nature, even in the middle of a busy city. I miss having this little sanctuary so close since moving further north, but these works bring me back to a place that gave me so much space to breathe.
MERRI CREEK 2 is part of a pair, alongside MERRI CREEK 1. Created at the same time, the two works share a palette and intention. They can be shown together and look lovely as a complementary pair.
